Unexpected Lessons

Who are the Samaritans in your life? God often speaks through the people we least expect. (Luke 17:11-19)

In this Sunday’s Gospel (Luke 17:11-19), Jesus heals ten lepers. But only one returns to give thanks—and that one is a Samaritan, an outcast.

In Scripture, Samaritans were not “good” but rather excluded, marginalized, and dismissed. Yet Jesus points to this Samaritan as the one who teaches us a lesson in gratitude.

It’s a challenge for us today: who are the people we’ve tried to cast out—those whose politics, religion, worldview, or lifestyle we believe we could never learn from? Christ reminds us that God teaches through unexpected people and circumstances.

💭 Who might God be trying to speak through in your own life? Who are the “Samaritans” you may need to reconsider, reevaluate, and recognize as bearers of God’s presence?
